Capitalization as a Creative Writing Literary Device

Using capitalization to improve a creative writing.

Capitalization of words in the middle of a sentence is a form of literary device used by fiction writers to evoke emotional reaction from their reader.

Weird mechanism to improve creative writing

Lorrie Moore is a famous for stylistic use of capitalization, in reviewing her, David Gate of New York Times stated that, she’s “one of the all-time great deployers of the exclamation point,” she does this mostly by using capitalization.

Here is a phrase from Moore’s “People Like That Are the Only People Here”, The New Yorker, January 27, 1997;

“The Oncologist describes the tumor as “fast but wimpy,” which the Mother sees as Claudia Osk from the fourth grade. The Baby likes the hospital. He smiles and waves: “What a little Cancer Personality!”

Critics suggests that Moore’s use of capitalization is imperative because she writes from a second person point of view (Telling the story as an observer; The Mother said…the Father). Notwithstanding, it is undeniable the distinction capitalization gives her writing.

Not many established writers uses capitalization as a writing device, in the article Fiction Writers Review, Anne Stameshkin mentioned a few names with some examples.

As a creative writer, the difficult part of using capitalization as a device is to apply it and still maintain the context of your work, even a creative mind can be subjected to scrutiny in case of misapplication of this literal device.

At the moment, there isn’t a lot of material on using capitalization as a creative writing device, but I suppose a general understanding of capitalization rules should be the starter for anyone hoping to deploy it as a creative device.

Rules of capitalization is well explained in this online Grammar Book.

The Grammar Book mentioned above should be fine, but if you want to purchase a hardcover, here is a useful list from eBay.

Write Your own Original Story

How you can write your own original story with your own fresh ideas.

Original stories have voices of their own, and that originality is the indelible marker that imprints a story in the minds of readers.

I wouldn’t be writing today if not for the inspirations I got enjoying original stories. Think about those classics like Eze goes to school, Things Fall Apart or Arrow of God? Honestly, all my burnt candles and broken lantern discarded in the process of reading those great books were worth it, but more important is their originality.

Of course I give credit to my mom who among other hobbies enjoyed reading. She regularly recommended good books. Thanks to her, I read George Orwell’s Animal farm even before realizing its global acclamation.

The moral of my story is that anyone can write an original story. Never mind the notion that new ideas don’t exist, it’s only an excuse of a lazy writer for copying another person’s work. Just to be clear, there is nothing wrong with imitation, after all it’s the funniest form of flattery.

I remember one evening, we had just finished dinner and were chilling at the verandah, enjoying the smell of roasted corn from a neighboring vendor. Then my mom started talking about Kumin-rikuku, a book she had read.

Later I read the book, and saw for myself the protagonist; whose tortured character till today remains my personification of “vengeance”. That I dedicated a whole chapter of my story, The Smoke Writer, to vengeance was not an accident.

At the end of the day, this piece would tantamount to a mere recitation of nostalgia, if I fail to share factors that helps with writing an original story.

First of all, understanding the difference between evolution, and imitation is the first step in creative writing. It doesn’t matter how many times a story has been told, re-telling it from your perspective is one way of creating your own original story. The Star Wars series, and saga remains very popular, because each edition is an evolution of the former. ( Star Wars Boxed Set: Episodes I-VI).

Secondly, don’t focus on the words count. It is better to write a short, and an original story of your own, than to write a long collection of lines from other peoples’ work. If you must flatter a writer, go to his or her page and pour your heart out. Who wouldn’t appreciate that? As opposed to someone finding traces of his work, published under your name. Short stories genres are growing in popularity, who knows, maybe we are becoming lazier. But in a world where news is faster than food, few people wants to read a cyclopedia in the name of a novel. A lot of people would prefer to read a short, and enticing story.

Thirdly, remember that necessity is the mother of invention. Invent facts to personalize, and add originality to your story. Let your imagination run wild, design facts for your characters. That is the main difference between a fiction and a non-fiction. Although cautious is advice, to avoid crossing that thin line between creativity and madness. There is an unwritten rule about keeping fictions closer to the realm of reality.

My last advice is that you create a character from a part you. Your talent will manifest mostly in the characters in your story. To a significant extent, your characters will define your writing. I wouldn’t have remembered anything about Kumin-rikuku, had it not been for the vengeance seeking protagonist, who gave his life for justice. If you can illustrate your protagonist perfectly, you would leave imprints in the minds of your readers.

In conclusion, believe that you can create your own original story. Creative writing is not a skill reserved for the talented few. American novelist, Professor James Hynes, in his work, Writing Great Fiction: Storytelling Tips and Techniques, illustrates how we all can achieve great writing. You can be successful, but I recommend his book, as a guide to writing your own original story.

Digital Addiction: The scientific fact that our smart phones and electronics is leaving us not much better than crack heads

Does it make any sense that; advancement in mobile devices, and the increase in digital accidents appear to be in tandem? In the US alone, cell phones are credited for over a million accidents. In 2015, up to 100,000 accidents and arrests made in Japan, a connection with smartphones, according to Toyota Newsroom.

Practices that helps with my writing

Three writing Practices that I think are important for my writing progress.

Inspiration

Caution, words-wise

Relax and Calm

I started working on The Smoke Writer  in November, 2016. By the end of December same year, the final editing was completed. I did not planned or think about it much, but when the inspiration came, I knew what I was going to write. Once I started writing, the flow never stopped. Seemingly, I had developed the idea overnight, but that was not the case. Supposedly, we ought to search outside the box for knowledge. Yet, most writers refers to a box within. The mind is like an incubator, collecting and conceiving ideas from all our experiences. It is within our creative scope to then, to modify those ideas and create an enticing stories out of them.

Another helpful practice for me was, writing free of pressure. There was no deadline either. Creating fiction is my hobby, and writing The Smoke Writer, was no exception. Although it turned out to be a nice write up, that is according to the reviews it got. Besides, writing in an atmosphere devoid of stress helps to keep the mind sharp. Seriously, if you are digging couple of years back for inspiration, you need a sharp mind.

Another thing was the choice of words. Thanks to my editors, I had to do away with so many vocabularies. Fortunately, I already visualized the story. So replacing unfitting words was no big deal. Besides, with numerous online sources, it is now easier to learn, and correct not just grammatical errors, but also writing hints, and words that are suitable for any given scenario.

There is no better time to enjoy writing, so enjoy yourself if that what you do. My advice is to figure out what inspires you. Also to cultivate positive energy, bearing in mind your choice of words.

I hope you find these advice useful. If you are kind enough to drop us a comment that will be great. Also, check out my book on Amazon. It will be free for some time, and let me know what you think about it. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MU3LAGW

The Smoke Writer: A tale of vengeance and shape-shifting.

Obi, the smoke writer ventured the City of Porta to redefine the art of storytelling, instead he rediscovered his true identity.

The Smoke Writer is a story about having a dream, working hard for it, and hoping that luck come your way. The idea that we can reach any height is reinforced in a society that encourages us to dream and aspire for greatness. All we need to do is ask, and we shall be given. Strengthened by those assurances, Obi wakes everyday eager to claim his rightful status as a wordsmith.

Why can’t he? After all, he is a legitimate descendant of Uche; a legendary storyteller from Ntu village, immortalized in the minds of the people for his magnetizing storytelling ability. Uche’s protege once enchanted the king with a story, and the king froze in awe for five minutes after the story have ended. Even in war times, the Uches were indispensable. Not only did they fought alongside their comrades, they also motivated their fellow warriors with victorious tales of their predecessors.

Conceived in the age of Windows and Macintosh, Obi took upon himself the burden to keep Uche’s legendary alive. Convinced that whoever endeavored to be a storyteller will have to write it, Obi maintained that, tales by the moonlight was for a time long gone, he

A lit lamp covered with a basket is of no use, unless it is place on a stand where people can benefit from its light. Obi needed to get his stories out. To this end he set his eyes on the shining City of Porta. Certainly stars are born in the villages, but it is in Porta that they are illuminated, or forever dimmed. Every author whose work saw the light of the day, went through Porta. For Obi to succeed as a wordsmith, he will have to pass through Porta.

Self-rediscovery in Porta

Crashing his way into the Porta was one thing, but getting a publisher to listen was a different issue. He was on the verge of giving up when he met Ken, a man not limited to conventional publishing rules. Obi then told him one of the saddest stories ever; the misadventure of Raj. The vengeance seeking Raj had arrived the heart of darkness, bent on conniving with the devil to destroy his magician opponent. Consumed with bitterness, Raj made a fatal mistake that got his transformed into a tree.

However, it was with the story of Oji the shape-shifter, which eventually got him a publishing deal. Not only was Oji a shape-shifter, he was also a lover, and he punished severely anyone who dared to make advances to his beloved.

As fate had it, the very tradition of oral storytelling he wanted to change, became his key to fulfillment.

The Inevitable dilemma of relationships

The dilemma of listening to people’s complaint is that; you are either obliged to assist or in the least share their predicament (somehow).

An acquaintance told me he doesn’t visit bars anymore. Why? A drinking-mate formed the habit of complaining to him about his wife. At first, he wasn’t sure if it was the influence of shots flying back and forth? A chemical reaction of sound and liquid can sure cause some hallucination. Such reaction could be behind the bitter man’s lamentation.

He decided to avoid the bar. A library he concluded; would give him the serenity he sought. He was mistaken. A woman found the map to his study table. Perhaps it was his social disposition that attracted people to him. Nevertheless, the woman wanted to talk. He had assumed that far end of the library was the deep end of quietness, apparently for this woman; it was a less strict corner where hush gossip was possible.

Okay, “let’s talk”, he said. “You were saying something”? He asked, hoping for a brief “forget about it” reply. Again he was mistaken. She went into this tirade about her husband; she had helped him become what he is, she picked him from the devil’s jaw, and personally flew him to heaven. She was his: mother, sister, brother, and uncle. Including grandmother.

Okay, “I now know why I am not a renowned writer”, he thought aloud; “I have been wasting my time with the wrong hobby”, insisted my bewildered acquaintance. His true calling was to be a Councillor or rather a listener! A spouse complaint listener – to be precise. There was urgent need to create that title if it was inexistent?

Momentarily he was carried away, he fantasized about his new establishment. Nothing is more exciting than the prospect of great career change – but then it hit him; “my wife!” What was she saying about him? What are her accusations? What was he being persecuted for? If everybody else complained about their partner, why would he be an exception? He was asking me how to approach his wife. He wanted it from the horse’s mouth.

My humble opinion was; talk to your wife if you really want to, but sometimes, sincere conversations are better left alone.

Sincere
